Tutorial: Rip DVD for Streaming to Roku 4 via Plex

Q: “Hello all, I am trying to rip a few children DVDs and store them on Plex for playing on a Roku Ultra and Roku 4. I used MakeMKV and my PMS found the file without issue. When I play the file on either Roku everything is fine but it doesn’t look very good. Is there a way to get the DVD video to look sharper on Plex?”

More and more users choose the hassle-free way to stream the hottest movies, TV shows, music and more on smart TV/HTPC through Roku 4 streamer, and use Plex to manage local media video, music and photos. However, when you try to copy movies from DVD disc onto Plex media server, and stream them to Roku 4 via Plex, you’ll disappointed to find the video formats are not supported.

The ideal video format for Roku 4 and Plex streaming is:

  • Container MP4
  • Video Codec H.264 (for 1080p and below) H.265 (For 4K)
  • Audio Codec AC3 for both 2 channel and 5.1 surround
  • Set the size appropriately and a reasonable bitrate like 2-3 mbps

So, we suggest you rip DVD to Roku 4 and Plex supported video formats like H.264 codec in an mp4 or mkv container. At first glance, there’re kinds of different DVD ripping tool on the market, some preferred MakeMKV, as MakeMKV can rip CSS encrypted DVD to MKV container but without compression, so the Roku stream and plex will re-encode the videos during the streaming, which will lead low-quality video and cost much GPU.

Luckily, Brorsoft DVD Ripper the optimal DVD ripper that can rip/convert any (protected) DVD to Plex/Roku supported H.264 MKV, MP4 or 4K H.265 videos in best quality. The program also gives you options to compress the video to reduce its file size, change the resolution to fit any screen and more. The equivalent Mac version, please turn to Brorsoft DVD Ripper for Mac.
